Deck the Halls: Easy and Affordable Holiday Décor Tips

The holidays are here and while it can be an exciting time of the year spent with family and friends; it can also be a rather expensive occasion that tends to sneak up on us. With costly family meals, gift giving, and additional events and expenses it can be hard to budget much for decorating but many of us still want to be able to feel that holiday spirit from the moment we enter our home.

Focus on Key Areas

Focusing on key areas in your home while decorating helps create a cohesive feel throughout your home. We recommend focusing on these key areas when decorating for the holidays!

New Paragraph

Front Door

Make sure to pay special attention to your front door when it comes to decorating to create a warm and inviting entry. We believe this all starts with a nice wreath. There are budget-friendly choices when it comes to wreaths but sometimes, they can be hard to find. If purchasing one is not in the budget, you could choose to make one for a fraction of the price. Use recycled garland and ornaments to create a new wreath for your front door. Hanging garland and lights around the frame of doors and windows is also a great way to complete the look. Adding in poinsettias and a holiday themed “Welcome Mat” to your front door will put your front door a step above the rest!

Living Room

Add holiday themed throw pillows and a matching throw blanket to your sofa and chairs to bring the holiday cheer to your living area. If you have a coffee table, refresh it with holiday books and candles that match your holiday theme. Try enhancing the space with holiday theme faux plants that embrace the holiday décor. This can even be done by adding old garland, cranberry sticks, and pinecones to a flower vase.

Dining Table

A simple holiday table runner is a great for keeping your décor flowing throughout your home. There are several options for a dining center piece around the holidays. One of our favorites is a 3-candle holder featuring garland, classic ornaments, and battery-operated lights. These additions will also help put you in the spirit when it comes to Christmas Dinner.

 Embrace DIY Projects

DIY projects can be a great way to pass time inside on a cold winter day! The internet is full of fun DIY décor items that can often be made with everyday household items. Make an experience out of it and store the DIY projects after the season to use for years to come.

Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Paper snowflakes
  • Ornament Garlands
  • Mason Jar Luminaries
  • Handmade Wreaths

Hang Lights

Around windows, shelves, mirrors, bookcases, and staircase railings! Get festive with it, remember, decorating does not have to make anyone happy but yourself! If you like it, go for it! Lighting can really spruce up a space and create the warm winter wonderland you have been dreaming of!

Shop Secondhand/Smart

We have all heard that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure! This could not be more true than when it comes to holiday decorations. We all have different ideas for decorating and what one person may love, another may find outdated. Take advantage of the trendy themes and build your holiday décor collection with classic staple pieces that can be found at secondhand stores. Another great opportunity is to shop smart! If you are like me, it can seem sad to purchase holiday décor items after the holidays are over but the savings you will have will bring you joy when the next season rolls around.

Start with What You Have & Repurpose Everyday Items

Before buying anything new, take an inventory of your existing holiday decorations. Look for ornaments, lights, ribbons, or festive items you have stored away. Check with family and friends to find pieces that may not match what they are going for anymore but could be repurposed with a little creativity! Mixing and matching old pieces in new ways can refresh your décor without costing a dime.
